Practical hosting guide

First Linux VPS Setup Checklist

Set up access, updates, monitoring and recovery before putting an application into production.

Confirm access and a recovery route

  1. Check the selected Linux release is supported and record the server address and console recovery method.
  2. Sign in through a secure SSH connection and establish an administrator account appropriate to the distribution.
  3. Configure SSH key authentication and test a second session before changing password or root-login policy.
  4. Keep the original session open until a fresh login and console recovery have been checked.

Patch and restrict the server

Use the distribution’s package manager to install security updates and review whether a reboot is required. Configure the firewall for the services you intend to expose, allowing your administration route before applying restrictions.

Restrict database and management interfaces to the required networks. Keep unused services disabled and protect application secrets outside public document roots.

Operate it after launch

Set up disk, memory and service monitoring; review logs; schedule updates; and arrange off-server backups of the application data and configuration. Test a restore before relying on the server for important production work.

Self-managed VPS maintenance belongs to you or your administrator. Document an incident contact, recovery steps and the owner of each service.

Use the instructions for your distribution

For Ubuntu, follow the current OpenSSH documentation and server security guidance. Menu labels, package names and defaults can vary by image.
