Use WordPress Staging Safely
Test themes, plugins and code on a separate copy, then plan deployment around changes made on the live site.
Create a separate testing copy
On the WordPress platform, use the staging tool available in your hosting control panel to create a separate copy of the installation. Confirm which files and database are copied and how to access the staging address.
Restrict access to staging, discourage indexing and avoid sending real customer emails. For ecommerce, use payment test mode and review integrations that could create real bookings, fulfilments or other actions.
Test the change you intend to release
- Take a current backup and record the live WordPress, theme and plugin versions.
- Apply the intended update or code change on staging.
- Check key templates on mobile and desktop, including forms, logins, search and checkout where applicable.
- Review errors, performance and plugin compatibility.
- Agree which files and database changes will be deployed.
Protect new live content and orders
A complete staging-to-live clone may overwrite the live database. For sites receiving new orders, registrations or enquiries, plan a final data sync or deploy only the required files and configuration.
Agree a change window if trading needs to pause. Keep the pre-release backup and verify the live site after deployment. A successful staging test reduces uncertainty but does not replace live verification.
Make staging part of maintenance
You or your developer remain responsible for extension compatibility, content and application behaviour. Use the hosting tools to support that work, with a repeatable backup, test and release routine.
